Offa’s Twisted Wye Kanter – 2017 Report

Report & Results of the 2017 event

The Offa’s Twisted Wye Kanter was created over twelve months ago. The South Wales LDWA committee wanted to organise a winter event but didn’t want to manage outside checkpoints with the unpredictability of the British winter weather that might have been considerably unkind. The idea of the kanter was born because then we would only need one Walk HQ base. However, we were very aware that kanters are an acquired taste, and over the years, walk entrants have become very comfortable with route descriptions which in turn have reduced the ability of some walkers to be able to confidently self-navigate. What about a kanter then where purists could self-navigate but others could simply enjoy a day out solving clues as they followed a route description? A hybrid; an event for all! That’s how our ‘twisted’ kanter was born!

As Challenge Walk Co-ordinator for the South Wales LDWA, I took ownership of the route creation. I live within walking distance of the Wye Valley and so it was easy for me to visit to create the routes. We wanted our entrants to explore an area that didn’t have open moorland! All our other challenge events do! And because it was to be a winter event, we knew that the Wye Valley would be reasonably sheltered. We also wanted our walk location to be easy to access and with Chepstow being on the M48 (M4 corridor) it was easy to get to.

Entries opened for the four distances and by November we had hit our maximum of 150. We were staggered that there was so much interest in our event. Thankfully, all that were held on the waiting list did get an opportunity to enter and on Sunday morning we were expecting 151 people to turn up. In the end, 138 entrants went out to explore the Wye Valley.

This event only went ahead because of the hard work of the South Wales LDWA committee, family and friends. It was a long day on Sunday. We started work at 6am and left the hall at 7.45pm. It’s probably less tiring doing the walk, but we loved seeing all the happy faces and hearing that people had loved the routes. The details of all those who helped to make the event possible are listed below. Work has already commenced on different routes for 2018 and we know that we will surprise you by taking you to places that you will not have visited before! Thank-you for supporting us by entering the event.
