Weekend Away: Beacon Hill, 15 miles, Sunday 18th June 2017, Route: (view, download), Photographs
- Meet/Start time : 09:00. At: Meet at Knighton Railway Station at 09:00, we drive 4 miles to Knucklas where the walk starts. , SO290724
- Description: The walk is a circular one with Beacon Hill as the focal point. The area is very wild and remote, however, our walk accesses it by means of a steady ascent over several miles on fine grassy tracks. I expect the duration to be around 7.5 to 8 hours with minimum two or possibly three stops, one of which will be on Beacon Hill itself. There is 2,750' ascent on mostly good tracks with some rough walking (one mile max, spread out over several stretches) around the midway point. There is some walking (just over 1km) on the B 4355 at the end. This road, when I walked it with Emma, seems more traffic free than it's B class status would suggest. There are sheep throughout the walk so dogs must be on leads. Bring plenty of water as there are very limited opportunities to acquire supplies (other than from streams/ponds) on this walk.
- Notes: Parking at Knucklas is limited so ideally we need to take full cars to the village to keep car numbers to a minimum. The journey time to Knucklas from Knighton is around ten minutes.

- Notes: This is the easiest of the 4 sections with around 3400' of climbing. The first climb out of Llanddeusant is the biggest of the day of around 1100 feet; the terrain then gives way to rocky moorland and good tracks, some rough ground on the way. The tops are exposed to weather so please bring the necessary clothing.

- Notes: A mixture of tough rugged upland terrain for quite a substantial distance, then on various tracks and lanes, a bit wet underfoot on lowland moors. There is an hourly bus that can be caught from Ystradgynlais Bus Station back to the cars (T6A), the walk route passes within half a mile of the bus station. (walkers can leave the walk at 17 miles). Terrain underfoot is largely rugged moorland for the first 15 miles, then gives way to easier terrain.
